All About Luxury Vinyl Plank- Pros and Cons

Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) is a flooring option that can replicate the look of hardwood flooring. In the past, this flooring option was used for kitchens, bathrooms and other areas in the home that are susceptible to water and moisture. Of course, like any flooring option, it has its pros and cons:

Pros

The good thing about LVP is its easy maintenance. Natural wood flooring can have very specific maintenance rules to avoid damage. LVP has a protective layer, which does not really need waxing and polishing, but instead needs mopping and sweeping to maintain its appearance.

LVP also has wide design flexibility, offering different design options that can mimic natural wood, stone or ceramic. The wood patterns can be embedded into the tile to give it a realistic look. Since the design is protected with the wear layer of the tile, it is guarded against scratches. You can basically beat it up as much as you want, but are unlikely to damage it.

Another advantage is the cost efficiency. You’re getting the best of both worlds; a floor with a realistic wood appearance at a lower price.

Cons

LVP is still vinyl, and doesn’t have the warmth of real wood. One of the most important disadvantages of LVP is the safety risk. Due to its hard surface, slipping and falling onto LVP due to moisture on the surface can cause injury.

LVP can also become discolored due to sunlight. Some rubber materials, like that of the back of a floor mat, can also cause vinyl discoloration. LVP is also not biodegradable which can be important to some homeowners. It is still 100% recyclable.

Certain brands of LVP can also impact the indoor air quality. Always be sure that wherever you buy from, you check the manufacturer to see if they meet all emission standards.
