Hardwood Floor Journey: How the NCAA Final Four Court Was Built

Tuesday, April 11th, 2017

A hardwood floor is probably the last thing you think of when watching basketball, but there’s always a story behind the court. This year’s Men’s Final Four competed on a court that started deep in the Michigan forest, going through steps of harvesting, staining and painting. Through an extensive process, 500 trees were harvested and 418 panels of wood were used. Five months later, it made its way to the University of Phoenix Stadium in Arizona, becoming the very court North Carolina won on against Gonzaga. This process of bringing trees to tipoff is detailed in an article on ESPN, and includes videos and pictures of the progression.

Basic Maintenance Do’s and Don’ts

Monday, April 3rd, 2017

Signature Hardwood Floors

Hardwood floor maintenance is generally very quick and easy. Routine cleaning involves sweeping, dusting, mopping or vacuuming. Be sure to clean spills ASAP with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Do not use wet mops or steam mops; these can damage the finish or the wood over periods of time.

In order to avoid scratches, place breathable throw rugs at entrances, put floor protector pads at the bottoms of the legs of any furniture, and avoid walking on the floors with sports cleats or high-heel shoes.

If your floor begins to look a little dull, use a wood floor cleaner to maintain the finish. Use it as directed, and make sure you are using products recommended by your flooring or finish manufacturer. Using the wrong type of cleaning product could damage your finish and wood.

Water-based finishes are applied to the surface of the floor. They are usually clear and very durable.

Oil-based finishes are applied to the surface of the floor. They are amber and over time, will turn yellow, and are also very durable.

Moisture-cured finishes are applied to the surface of the floor, and can be clear to amber in color and are extremely durable.

Natural oil finishes can be penetrating oils or hard wax oil finishes. They penetrate into the pores of the wood to achieve a durable, long-lasting finish. However, these finishes require much more routine maintenance so the oils don’t dry out over time.

UV finishes are applied to the surface of the floor at the factory, but can also be applied on the job site. They use UVa and UVb light to cure the finish instantly with no dry time.

Conversion varnish finishes are applied to the surface of the floor, and are clear to slightly amber and are extremely durable.

Wax finishes are the oldest floor finish in use. They are applied in thin coats, and soak into the pores of the wood. The coats are buffed and hardened to create a protective penetrating seal. Wax finishes aren’t as popular as they once were because of the maintenance involved.

Have any more questions about the different types of finishes? Signature Hardwood Floors would be happy to help. Contact our flooring experts for any questions, and a FREE ESTIMATE. You can call us at 410.415.0755 or click here today!
