Reducing Sunlight Damage on Hardwood Floors

Monday, July 9th, 2018

Fading of hardwood floors as a result of sunlight is a problem that is unavoidable to a degree. The sun’s strong ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) rays fade everything over time. Wood floors are no exception. Wood floors with oil based finishes fade more severely than those with water based finished, but one thing’s for sure, there is no such thing as a fade-proof floor. However, there are a few things you can do to reduce the amount of fading on your hardwood floors.

Figuring out paint colors

2018 has seen a growing popularity of neutral colors. Simple and clean colors bring a feeling of calm to any room. They also help to brighten up a space.

If you don’t want neutrals and are looking for something bold, definitely do it. Paint is an easy way to bring that boldness to your home.

Finding the right flooring

There are many options for kitchen floors in your home. Wood floors are a popular choice- they have the ability to add character to any room. An entire room can be built around them. Some people question having hardwood floors in their kitchen, but what they don’t realize is that they are an extremely practical choice. Wood floors can have attractive add-ons like going over radiant heating systems. Who wouldn’t want the feeling of a heated floor?

Remember that contrasting is key, so if you have wood floors and wood cabinetry, go lighter and darker. You can paint your cabinets any color so your wood floors pop. Or, if your kitchen is made up of cooler tones, contrast it with some warm hardwood floors. We recommend hardwood floors that have some texture and details in them so they can hide traffic marks from people’s shoes or your pet’s feet.

Warm tones for hardwood floor have always been a favorite among homeowners, but light neutral colors are growing in popularity. However, dark stained hardwood floors are the less practical choice. They usually show more scratches or dents caused by traffic. They are beautiful, just maybe not the best choice for kitchens.

Textured finished hardwood floors are also a great choice. This is due to their ability to hide wear and damage.

Make it yours

Make sure your kitchen reflects your personality. The kitchen is the heart of the home, so make sure it is everything you want it to be. If you love bold, get some bold colored cabinets! Or, you can get a bold light fixture or playfully designed mats. If you enjoy more of a calm, neutral look, opt for a more simple feel. Get some simple colored mats or neutral colored cabinets.

Subfloor Damage

Subfloor may not be in your mind often, since it is under your visible wood floor. When something seems off about your wood floors, though, it might not be the floor itself, but the subfloor. This isn’t very common, but if it does happen it can be a huge problem. The subfloor supports both the wood floor above it, but also everything in the room (including yourself).
