Fun Fact: Tally of Trees in U.S. Forests

Here’s an interesting fact: trees outnumber people 300 to 1 in the U.S. This includes woodlands that cover one-third of the country in the U.S. Forest Service’s latest tally.

For purpose of the census, acres with at least 10% tree canopy are qualified. The U.S. also exported $8.7 billion in forest products in 2016. This includes lumber, paper, pulp, logs, etc.

This census is extremely important in order to predict trends in the future. It allows us to evaluate whether current forest management practices will be sustainable in the long run, and whether current policies will allow the next generation to enjoy America’s forests like we do currently. Good news is, the census found that in the South, longleaf and slash pines are in the decline, but the forests are stable overall. Looks like the forests have a promising future ahead!
