The Advantages of Hardwood Flooring Over Carpet

Thursday, September 18th, 2014

If you’re looking for new flooring, chances are you’re considering either hardwood or carpet. Both have their pros and cons, but hardwood has several distinct advantages over carpet that could make it the better choice for you. Learn why your next floor should be hardwood in this week’s blog!

The Advantages of Hardwood Flooring Over Carpet

Durability

With proper care, hardwood flooring can last for many years. Carpet will have to be replaced every 5-7 years or so, which is a very short lifespan for a floor.

Ease of Maintenance

Hardwood floors require only a regular dusting and scratch prevention techniques to keep them looking good. Carpet, on the other hand, is much harder to clean. Vacuuming can only do so much, and deep steam cleaning is necessary several times a year to keep a carpet clean.

Costs

Though the upfront costs associated with hardwood are generally greater than those of carpet, the costs of cleaning and replacing carpet outpace those of hardwood over time.

Value

People love hardwood flooring, and it will always be in demand. Hardwood floors add value to your home that carpet can’t match.

Hypoallergenic

When particles in the air such as pollen and dust settle on the floor, they sit on top of a hardwood floor, easily cleaned off. Carpet captures these particles in its fibers and traps them there. Over time they get released as people walk on the floor, meaning they’ll be floating around in the air in your home. Hardwood floors are great for improving the indoor air quality of your home, and because they’re hypoallergenic, they’re great if you have a sensitive nose.

Aesthetic Appeal

Hardwood flooring has an aesthetic appeal that we feel is unmatched by any other kind of flooring. Hardwood is also very versatile in its aesthetic appeal. From rugged and homey to classic and modern, you can find a wood floor that fits your tastes just right.

How Hardwood Floor Improves Indoor Air Quality

Friday, October 25th, 2013

One of the many benefits of hardwood floors is that they can actually improve the quality of the air in your home. This is because particles and bacteria in the air tend to settle, and when they do they land on the ground. Regularly cleaning your hardwood floor will easily take care of these particles such as dust, pet dander, and allergens. However, carpeted floors retain these particles, and when the carpet is disturbed by someone walking across it, the particles are again released into the air. In addition, it’s more difficult to clean a carpet and therefore they generally aren’t cleaned as much as wood floors, so these particles tend to stick around longer. Cleaning a hardwood floor is easy to do on a regular basis, and by doing so, you keep the air in your home cleaner as well.

Benefits of Hardwood Floors Compared to Carpets

Friday, September 27th, 2013

Hardwood or carpet? That is the question. It’s one of the few that Shakespeare never had to contemplate, as carpet didn’t come around until the industrial revolution. We’re here to sort this out once and for all.

One of the best things hardwood has going for it against carpet is its cleanliness. Not only is hardwood much easier to clean than carpet, it also doesn’t trap dust, allergens, and bacteria like carpet does. Hardwood’s hypo-allergenic quality makes it great for those with respiratory issues or severe allergies. In addition, synthetic materials that are used during the manufacturing of carpet are released into the air once the carpet is installed. There are eco-friendly carpets, but they come with a higher price tag.

Hardwood floors are also much easier to maintain that carpets. Carpets inevitably break down over time, especially in high traffic areas. This looks bad, and once it starts happening, it often starts to break down exponentially quicker. Carpet also requires regular cleaning, which is expensive. Even with intensive cleaning, many particles often sink down to the base of the carpet where they can’t be cleaned, and cause the base of the carpet to deteriorate. Hardwood may require occasional maintenance, but can often be restored to its original splendor without needing to be replaced. It is also much more resistant to spills and stains than carpet.

As you can see, hardwood has a lot going for it. And so we pose the question again. Hardwood or carpet? The answer, we think, is pretty clear.
