Which Wood Floor is Perfect for My Home?

Monday, November 7th, 2016

Site finished or factory-finished?

Both site-finished and factory-finished have their benefits. Choosing one will depend on the level of customization you would like, and your own personal preference.

A site-finished floor is when finish is applied on the job site, in the room where the raw hardwood floor is installed. It offers the most customization, such as, staining, borders, etc. Although, you need to put aside time to let it dry, in which you will not be able to walk on your floor.

A factory finished floor, or pre-finished hardwood floor is when the finish is applied at the factory during the manufacturing process ,way before it gets to your home. This offers less customization, but you can walk on your floors immediately after they are installed and there’s no mess.

Glossy or matte?

Sheen of your hardwood floors is all about personal preference. Gloss finishes offer the most shine (think basketball court), but they will also reflect more light, thus showing more dirt and scratches. Semi-gloss finishes will offer minimal shine and will reflect some light, and are a very popular choice. Matte finishes offer the least amount of shine and reflect the least amount of light. The less sheen, the less likely you will see small scratches on the floor and other types of wear. More people today are choosing matte or satin finishes than any other.

Strip, plank or parquet?

Hardwood floors are manufactured in three ways: strip, plank, and parquet. These are all available in different species, colors, and widths, so it’s all about which you prefer. Strip flooring is less than 3 inches wide, and has a more linear effect, making the room look larger. Plank flooring is equal or greater than 3 inches wide. It is still linear, but its wider width creates a casual look. Lastly, parquet flooring varies in sizes, but it has a geometric non-linear look. It can be simple, or it can be complex.
