Winter is Approaching: How to Keep Elements Outdoors

Tuesday, December 3rd, 2019

December is here, which means winter is fast approaching. With sudden weather changes and temperatures plunging, it’s important to make sure you’re leaving outside elements, outside. Here’s how to prevent winter weather from making a mess inside your home:

Make sure your roof is in good condition

Before rain or snow starts pouring down onto your home, you need to make sure your roof is not damaged in any way. This includes any buckled or missing shingles that can lead to leaks. Also, make sure the flashing around your chimney is in good condition, and make sure any cracks are sealed.

Trim your trees

With trees starting to die down during the winter season, now is the best time to trim your trees and shrubs. This is especially helpful if in case of a storm, which can cause limbs and branches to fall onto your home if they are unstable or weighed down by snow or ice.

Get your mudroom ready

With ice, sleet and rain outside, bringing in moisture to your home can be a huge issue. To stop this from happening, make sure you have a space in your home where family can leave any umbrellas, wet jackets, and shoes. It doesn’t have to be a whole room – if you have hardwood floors in your home, you can put a rug or old carpet in front of entrances. You may also want to put a waterproof barrier under the rug to ensure that water does not escape and damage your wood floors.

These tips and tricks should get you ready for another year of winter weather! Make sure to always protect your investments by making sure your home and flooring is taken care of all season long. Protecting Your Hardwood Floors During the Holidays

Wednesday, November 20th, 2019

The holiday season is here, which means your home might be getting a lot more traffic. It’s important to keep up with maintenance of your hardwood floors so that when the new year rolls around, you’re not stressing about your floors being worn out. Here are a list of ways to ensure your floors remain fresh and damage-free through the holiday season.

Have a quality finish

If your hardwood floors are protected with a great finish then there is not much you need to do. It is a form against scratches or dents and even liquids. Even though you have a quality finish, you need to still make sure any spills are cleaned up immediately.

Add mats to doorways

Many outside elements such as melted snow or rain can cause damage to your hardwood floors. Make sure your home’s entrances have a mat for guests to wipe their shoes on, protecting your hardwood floors against moisture damage.

Be careful when moving furniture around

Moving furniture is more likely to damage your floors than high heel shoes. If you rearrange the furniture in your home to make room for guests, be sure that chairs and tables are picked up instead of being dragged around.  And, always put felt pads on the feet of your chairs and tables, just in case.

Ask guests to remove shoes

Even with mats, shoes can bring in elements to your home that aren’t good for your hardwood floors. Warn your guests to remove their shoes upon arrival to your home, or you can offer them slippers. This can keep your floors clean and prevent dirt from being spread around your home.

Sound Reduction for Homes with Hardwood Floors

Tuesday, November 12th, 2019

While hardwood floors are timeless, and instantly boost the value of a home, there can be one downside. Sound waves bounce easier in rooms with hardwood floors, making sound reduction an issue. However, it doesn’t have to be! Sound reduction can be created in your home in different ways – both pre-installation and post-installation. Keep reading to learn how:

Pre-installation sound reduction

If you have the opportunity to isolate noise in your home before your hardwood floors are put down, definitely do so. One way to do this is installing an acoustical soundboard under the subfloor. By doing this, you can insulate sound vibrations.

Another way to implement sound reduction pre-installation is with underlayments, like mats. They can be made from a variety of different materials such as vinyl, rubber or foam. Keep in mind, though, the thicker the better.

Post-installation sound reduction

If your home already has hardwood floors, you can implement sound reduction with your furniture options. For example, couches and sectionals that are made of a soft fabric work well for absorbing noises, compared to couches made with other materials such as leather. For your tables and chairs, utilize soft decorative options like cushions and tablecloths which can help to soften sound vibrations.

When thinking of sound reduction, you should also consider what is on your walls, floors and windows. An area rug can soak up the sound in a room, as well as draperies on a window. Consider using thick material like suede, instead of a lightweight fabric like cotton.

Fall Color Trends For Your Home

Thursday, November 7th, 2019

The weather outside is cooler, but the inside of your home doesn’t have to be! The latest fall design and color trends are all about earthy tones and bright colors – similar to that of the 80’s or 90’s. These colors can be fun to play around with and will look great in any home!

Blush and Camel

Nude tones like camel give off a luxurious feel wherever it is put. Blush tones also have a luxurious look, but can soften a space as well. These two colors can be used as accent colors in a room, and goes well with earthy tones like green or grey.

Woods

While wood is not a color, it still brings in natural tones to a home, and there are many stain colors to choose from. The rustic look of wood also creates a feeling of relaxation. An easy way to incorporate this into your home is with your flooring. Hardwood floors instantly add character and warmth to any room, and go with any color.

Red and Yellows

Bright reds bring in the feeling of power and confidence to a space, while yellow brings energy and joy. Since these colors are so intense, it is best to limit them to about 10% of your home’s palette. This can be through simple items such as artwork, fruits in a bowl, statement pillows, etc.

Plum and Navy

These bold colors can be the perfect pop of color for your home. These dark hues can work well contrasting nudes, blushes, or wood floors. If you’re really interested in incorporating these colors in your home, you can always paint your door or moldings to match.

Fall 2019 is all about warming up your home with deep shades, and incorporating pops of color. Wondering where to start? Your floors are the best place! 4 Ways You’re Ruining Your Floors

Wednesday, October 9th, 2019

Although hardwood flooring may seem low-maintenance, it still needs some TLC to maintain it’s beauty and longevity. But it doesn’t require just any old cleaning routine – there’s a correct way to clean your floors without ruining them. It’s easy to learn, and once you get the hang of it, it’ll be second nature to you. Here are cleaning habits you need to stop doing to ensure your floors stay damage-free!

Mopping the floors

Hardwood floors are not tiles! They absorb and hold moisture, which means that using a wet mop should never be done. Water can seep through the floorboards and lead to warping or swelling. If you do choose to mop your floors, you should never use one that is saturated. It should be basically dry in order to keep your floors from being damaged.

Using the wrong vacuum attachment

In time, using the wrong vacuum head can cause damage to your floors, scratching them and allowing dirt and dust to hide in more places. Stay away from vacuum heads that have rotating brushes or stiff bristles, and instead use an attachment with a soft brush.

Using household cleaners

Using regular household products that work for other surfaces, such as ammonia-based cleaners, are actually extremely harmful on hardwood floors. They will get rid of stains, but in turn will slowly start to eat away at the surface of the floors, permanently damaging them. Instead, use oil-based cleaning products that will not damage your wood floor’s appearance or eliminate it’s protective coat. We recommend using Bona hardwood floor cleaning products for your floors, as this is what always works best for us and our clients.

Not doing regular floor maintenance

One of the most important factors in extending the life of your hardwood floors is with regular, routine maintenance. Sweeping regularly will eliminate dust, but also extend you floor’s lifespan. Also, if you notice scratches on your floors that accumulate over time, opt for repairing them as soon as possible. The sooner you fix the problem, the easier and quicker the repair job will be!

Timeless Decor Essentials You Need In Your Home

Tuesday, September 17th, 2019

It’s September which means summer is almost over, and fall is approaching. With the seasons changing, your home is due for a change, too! This week, we’re going to show you the top decor items you should be putting in your home to create long-lasting versatility and beauty.

Bring in some art

A beautiful piece of artwork can completely change a room! You can find an art piece anywhere, whether it be from a thrift store, online, or somewhere you traveled. It can be a bright, colorful painting to bring liveliness to a room, a photograph that holds sentimental value, or a sculpture piece that stands out in a room.

Bring the outdoors, indoors

Having plants throughout your home can be a great way to decorate your home. You can customize based on the type of plants you want, whether it be big, long, short, colorful, whatever works for you. Another way to bring the outdoors indoors is by having hardwood floors. Hardwood flooring will never go out of style, and can also be customized based on your personality and needs. With so many different wood styles and stains to choose from, there’s no doubt you’ll find the perfect hardwood floors for your home.

A couch that stands out

Your couch is one of the most important pieces in your home. This is a piece of furniture that you should not only feel comfortable sitting and lounging in, but also seeing everyday. A solid colored couch made from cotton or linen will ensure it’s timeless and will always look and feel good.

Invest in some good storage

Storage space is essential in any home, especially those with pets or children. You can utilize a chest of drawers, which will look good in any room. It can stand by itself in a room or be near a bed or couch. You can dress it up by adding a mirror on the wall above it or adding decor pieces like picture frames and candles on top of it.

Seasons change, but timeless essentials never do. Our team here at Signature Hardwood Floors is ready to help you find your perfect hardwood floors that will never go out of style! Tips to Give Your Home a Modern (but comfortable) Look

Tuesday, August 13th, 2019

Modern home design can give off a clean, organized and polished look many people long for, but many worry it won’t have the personality of a real home. If you are interested in a modern design, but also want to maintain the comfort of your home, we’ve got tips to bring your desires to life:

Keep it comfortable

Monochromatic decor is usually associated with modern design, but adding a little color to your rooms are great way to make your home more personalized and comfortable. This can be done by using furniture pieces like couches and side tables, or decor items like throw pillows or curtains that have a pop of color.

Texturize it

If you don’t want the seemingly simple or bleak interior of some modern homes, adding something that appeals to your tactile sensations is a great way to combat this. This can be from textured pieces such as a shaggy rug or a leather couch and armchair. You can even it up a notch by using velvet wallpaper; anything that can appeal to your sense of touch.

Bring nature indoors

Spaces can look a lot less sterile when nature is brought into it. House plants and seasonal flowers can add beauty and life to any space. If you have oversized windows, show off any yard you have by planting flowers and plants outside as well.

Invest in wood

Replace boring marble or porcelain floors with natural hardwood floors. They are easy to maintain and can bring your modern space to life. Hardwood flooring can also accommodate almost any look, and will look good anywhere you put them in your home. It’s also a great excuse to go out and buy a pretty new area rug to throw down!

Personalize your space

A simple way to make your home more comfortable is to make it your own. Adding a personal touch can help reflect your personality in your home. Surrounding your home with family photos in frames can not only add that personal touch, but is also beautiful to look at. Try using different size frames throughout the home to make it more fun, and use frame colors such as black and white for that more modern feel.

First of all, you’ll save a lot of money in the long term with hardwood floors compared to other types of flooring. Let’s take carpet as an example. Replacing carpet is expensive, and so is the maintenance that carpet requires. Carpet cleaning and restoration have to be done on a regular basis. Add up all of those costs and it’s easy to see how hardwood floors save you money.

Not only does hardwood flooring save you money, it essentially gives you money by adding value to your home. The benefits of hardwood floors include durability, ease of maintenance, cleanliness, and visual appeal, all of which will add value to your home. Now that’s a great benefit of hardwood floors.
