Sound Reduction for Homes with Hardwood Floors

Tuesday, November 12th, 2019

While hardwood floors are timeless, and instantly boost the value of a home, there can be one downside. Sound waves bounce easier in rooms with hardwood floors, making sound reduction an issue. However, it doesn’t have to be! Sound reduction can be created in your home in different ways – both pre-installation and post-installation. Keep reading to learn how:

Pre-installation sound reduction

If you have the opportunity to isolate noise in your home before your hardwood floors are put down, definitely do so. One way to do this is installing an acoustical soundboard under the subfloor. By doing this, you can insulate sound vibrations.

Another way to implement sound reduction pre-installation is with underlayments, like mats. They can be made from a variety of different materials such as vinyl, rubber or foam. Keep in mind, though, the thicker the better.

Post-installation sound reduction

If your home already has hardwood floors, you can implement sound reduction with your furniture options. For example, couches and sectionals that are made of a soft fabric work well for absorbing noises, compared to couches made with other materials such as leather. For your tables and chairs, utilize soft decorative options like cushions and tablecloths which can help to soften sound vibrations.

When thinking of sound reduction, you should also consider what is on your walls, floors and windows. An area rug can soak up the sound in a room, as well as draperies on a window. Consider using thick material like suede, instead of a lightweight fabric like cotton.

Fall Color Trends For Your Home

Thursday, November 7th, 2019

The weather outside is cooler, but the inside of your home doesn’t have to be! The latest fall design and color trends are all about earthy tones and bright colors – similar to that of the 80’s or 90’s. These colors can be fun to play around with and will look great in any home!

Blush and Camel

Nude tones like camel give off a luxurious feel wherever it is put. Blush tones also have a luxurious look, but can soften a space as well. These two colors can be used as accent colors in a room, and goes well with earthy tones like green or grey.

Woods

While wood is not a color, it still brings in natural tones to a home, and there are many stain colors to choose from. The rustic look of wood also creates a feeling of relaxation. An easy way to incorporate this into your home is with your flooring. Hardwood floors instantly add character and warmth to any room, and go with any color.

Red and Yellows

Bright reds bring in the feeling of power and confidence to a space, while yellow brings energy and joy. Since these colors are so intense, it is best to limit them to about 10% of your home’s palette. This can be through simple items such as artwork, fruits in a bowl, statement pillows, etc.

Plum and Navy

These bold colors can be the perfect pop of color for your home. These dark hues can work well contrasting nudes, blushes, or wood floors. If you’re really interested in incorporating these colors in your home, you can always paint your door or moldings to match.

Fall 2019 is all about warming up your home with deep shades, and incorporating pops of color. Wondering where to start? Your floors are the best place! How to Instantly Boost Your Home’s Value

Wednesday, October 30th, 2019

Tip #1: Renovate any outdated rooms

Are there rooms in your house that look way too old for it’s time? Adding some modern feel to your home will ensure your home increases in price and value. If you don’t have the budget to do an entire renovation, simple fixes like repainting, adding in some light fixtures, or improving the ventilation in the home will do the trick.

Tip #2: Think green!

Buyers are looking for energy-efficient homes – and will only continue to do so in the future. In order to make your home more green, you can install energy-efficient bulbs, low energy appliances and heating, etc. Another way to do this is with hydro insulation. A home that is insulated will sell at a higher price than one that is not, giving you a great return on investment in the long run.

Tip #3 Update those floors

Have carpet in your home? Update to hardwood floors. This flooring choice is not only eye-catching, but also long-lasting. Having this in your home instead of carpet will tell future homeowners that they won’t have to worry about their flooring for a while, and adds a great amount of value to a home. Carpet or any other flooring option needs regular deep cleaning and overall, isn’t as pretty. And if you already have hardwood floors, consider getting them sanded and stained or refinished.

Tip #4 Paint the front door

The first look at your home is crucial in generating a lasting impression. Simply adding a fresh coat of paint or decoration to the front door can be a great way to add value, but not break the bank.

Tip #5 Fix the outside

A photo of your home is the first thing buyers will see. Making sure the outside of your home is as beautiful as the inside is crucial. You can trim the bushes, plant some flowers, powerwash the driveaway, revamp the mailbox – anything that will attract buyers to your home by first glance.

4 Ways You’re Ruining Your Floors

Wednesday, October 9th, 2019

Although hardwood flooring may seem low-maintenance, it still needs some TLC to maintain it’s beauty and longevity. But it doesn’t require just any old cleaning routine – there’s a correct way to clean your floors without ruining them. It’s easy to learn, and once you get the hang of it, it’ll be second nature to you. Here are cleaning habits you need to stop doing to ensure your floors stay damage-free!

Mopping the floors

Hardwood floors are not tiles! They absorb and hold moisture, which means that using a wet mop should never be done. Water can seep through the floorboards and lead to warping or swelling. If you do choose to mop your floors, you should never use one that is saturated. It should be basically dry in order to keep your floors from being damaged.

Using the wrong vacuum attachment

In time, using the wrong vacuum head can cause damage to your floors, scratching them and allowing dirt and dust to hide in more places. Stay away from vacuum heads that have rotating brushes or stiff bristles, and instead use an attachment with a soft brush.

Using household cleaners

Using regular household products that work for other surfaces, such as ammonia-based cleaners, are actually extremely harmful on hardwood floors. They will get rid of stains, but in turn will slowly start to eat away at the surface of the floors, permanently damaging them. Instead, use oil-based cleaning products that will not damage your wood floor’s appearance or eliminate it’s protective coat. We recommend using Bona hardwood floor cleaning products for your floors, as this is what always works best for us and our clients.

Not doing regular floor maintenance

One of the most important factors in extending the life of your hardwood floors is with regular, routine maintenance. Sweeping regularly will eliminate dust, but also extend you floor’s lifespan. Also, if you notice scratches on your floors that accumulate over time, opt for repairing them as soon as possible. The sooner you fix the problem, the easier and quicker the repair job will be!

Timeless Decor Essentials You Need In Your Home

Tuesday, September 17th, 2019

It’s September which means summer is almost over, and fall is approaching. With the seasons changing, your home is due for a change, too! This week, we’re going to show you the top decor items you should be putting in your home to create long-lasting versatility and beauty.

Bring in some art

A beautiful piece of artwork can completely change a room! You can find an art piece anywhere, whether it be from a thrift store, online, or somewhere you traveled. It can be a bright, colorful painting to bring liveliness to a room, a photograph that holds sentimental value, or a sculpture piece that stands out in a room.

Bring the outdoors, indoors

Having plants throughout your home can be a great way to decorate your home. You can customize based on the type of plants you want, whether it be big, long, short, colorful, whatever works for you. Another way to bring the outdoors indoors is by having hardwood floors. Hardwood flooring will never go out of style, and can also be customized based on your personality and needs. With so many different wood styles and stains to choose from, there’s no doubt you’ll find the perfect hardwood floors for your home.

A couch that stands out

Your couch is one of the most important pieces in your home. This is a piece of furniture that you should not only feel comfortable sitting and lounging in, but also seeing everyday. A solid colored couch made from cotton or linen will ensure it’s timeless and will always look and feel good.

Invest in some good storage

Storage space is essential in any home, especially those with pets or children. You can utilize a chest of drawers, which will look good in any room. It can stand by itself in a room or be near a bed or couch. You can dress it up by adding a mirror on the wall above it or adding decor pieces like picture frames and candles on top of it.

How to Protect Your Hardwood Floor

Thursday, July 25th, 2013

Hardwood floors are a beautiful flooring option that can add some value to your home. And if you have a hardwood floor, you want to do everything in your power to protect it. There are a multitude of ways in which you can protect your hardwood floor from scuffs and scratches that may occur. There are also many elements and ways for your hardwood floor to become damaged.

Follow a few of these tips to keep your hardwood floor looking as amazing as the day it was installed:

  • Simple solutions do a lot – Adding mats and rugs to areas of your home that receive large foot traffic or in front of any doors that lead outside is one way to protect your hardwood floor. Another way is to add protective attachments, also known as “tap on pads,” to your furniture legs. The constant sliding of your furniture can create serious scuffs and scratches that damage your hardwood floor.
  • Protect your floor from moisture – Another element that you need to protect your hardwood floor from is moisture. This not only includes any spills or water that gets on your hardwood floor, but this also includes the amount of humidity and temperature inside your house. Any spills and water that touches your hardwood floor should be cleaned up immediately. And the temperature in your home should be kept at a consistent level.
  • Keep your floors looking polished – The most simple solution for this is water and vinegar on a sponge mop, it’s a mixture that won’t strip your hardwood floors. Another solution is only using waxes, but many experts recommend using more natural materials such as olive oil for cleaning your hardwood floor. It’s a natural alternative that won’t harm the finish of your hardwood floor.
