Sound Reduction for Homes with Hardwood Floors

Tuesday, November 12th, 2019

While hardwood floors are timeless, and instantly boost the value of a home, there can be one downside. Sound waves bounce easier in rooms with hardwood floors, making sound reduction an issue. However, it doesn’t have to be! Sound reduction can be created in your home in different ways – both pre-installation and post-installation. Keep reading to learn how:

Pre-installation sound reduction

If you have the opportunity to isolate noise in your home before your hardwood floors are put down, definitely do so. One way to do this is installing an acoustical soundboard under the subfloor. By doing this, you can insulate sound vibrations.

Another way to implement sound reduction pre-installation is with underlayments, like mats. They can be made from a variety of different materials such as vinyl, rubber or foam. Keep in mind, though, the thicker the better.

Post-installation sound reduction

If your home already has hardwood floors, you can implement sound reduction with your furniture options. For example, couches and sectionals that are made of a soft fabric work well for absorbing noises, compared to couches made with other materials such as leather. For your tables and chairs, utilize soft decorative options like cushions and tablecloths which can help to soften sound vibrations.

When thinking of sound reduction, you should also consider what is on your walls, floors and windows. An area rug can soak up the sound in a room, as well as draperies on a window. Consider using thick material like suede, instead of a lightweight fabric like cotton.

Fall Color Trends For Your Home

Thursday, November 7th, 2019

The weather outside is cooler, but the inside of your home doesn’t have to be! The latest fall design and color trends are all about earthy tones and bright colors – similar to that of the 80’s or 90’s. These colors can be fun to play around with and will look great in any home!

Blush and Camel

Nude tones like camel give off a luxurious feel wherever it is put. Blush tones also have a luxurious look, but can soften a space as well. These two colors can be used as accent colors in a room, and goes well with earthy tones like green or grey.

Woods

While wood is not a color, it still brings in natural tones to a home, and there are many stain colors to choose from. The rustic look of wood also creates a feeling of relaxation. An easy way to incorporate this into your home is with your flooring. Hardwood floors instantly add character and warmth to any room, and go with any color.

Red and Yellows

Bright reds bring in the feeling of power and confidence to a space, while yellow brings energy and joy. Since these colors are so intense, it is best to limit them to about 10% of your home’s palette. This can be through simple items such as artwork, fruits in a bowl, statement pillows, etc.

Plum and Navy

These bold colors can be the perfect pop of color for your home. These dark hues can work well contrasting nudes, blushes, or wood floors. If you’re really interested in incorporating these colors in your home, you can always paint your door or moldings to match.

Fall 2019 is all about warming up your home with deep shades, and incorporating pops of color. Wondering where to start? Your floors are the best place! How to Instantly Boost Your Home’s Value

Wednesday, October 30th, 2019

Tip #1: Renovate any outdated rooms

Are there rooms in your house that look way too old for it’s time? Adding some modern feel to your home will ensure your home increases in price and value. If you don’t have the budget to do an entire renovation, simple fixes like repainting, adding in some light fixtures, or improving the ventilation in the home will do the trick.

Tip #2: Think green!

Buyers are looking for energy-efficient homes – and will only continue to do so in the future. In order to make your home more green, you can install energy-efficient bulbs, low energy appliances and heating, etc. Another way to do this is with hydro insulation. A home that is insulated will sell at a higher price than one that is not, giving you a great return on investment in the long run.

Tip #3 Update those floors

Have carpet in your home? Update to hardwood floors. This flooring choice is not only eye-catching, but also long-lasting. Having this in your home instead of carpet will tell future homeowners that they won’t have to worry about their flooring for a while, and adds a great amount of value to a home. Carpet or any other flooring option needs regular deep cleaning and overall, isn’t as pretty. And if you already have hardwood floors, consider getting them sanded and stained or refinished.

Tip #4 Paint the front door

The first look at your home is crucial in generating a lasting impression. Simply adding a fresh coat of paint or decoration to the front door can be a great way to add value, but not break the bank.

Tip #5 Fix the outside

A photo of your home is the first thing buyers will see. Making sure the outside of your home is as beautiful as the inside is crucial. You can trim the bushes, plant some flowers, powerwash the driveaway, revamp the mailbox – anything that will attract buyers to your home by first glance.

Upgrading the value of your home can be easy, and our team here at Signature Hardwood Floors is here to help you create a valuable home. Decorating Your Teen’s Bedroom for Back to School

Tuesday, August 6th, 2019

A new school year is coming up, which means you and your kids are preparing to get organized. If your child is entering high school, he or she may be longing for a new space that walks the line between childhood and adolescence. It’s simple to create a room for your teen that is not only cool (to their standards), but also age-appropriate. Here are some easy tips to create a more grown-up look for your teen’s bedroom:

Create a lot of storage space

We already know teenagers can have a messy room, so utilizing and creating storage spaces in their room will help keep them organized. This can be items such as bed frames with built in storage sections, creating adjustable shelving, and labeling containers. Investing in a desk with storage sections can also be beneficial not only for the cleanliness of the room, but for their school work as well.

Make sure it is sleep-friendly

Teenagers need at least 8-9 hours of sleep every night; teens who are sleep deprived can suffer mood swings and drowsiness, which can impact their schooling and even their driving. Make sure he or she is getting the necessary amount of sleep each night by first eliminating technology from the room. Good luck, right?  This includes computers, televisions, and gaming systems. Blackout curtains can also aid in giving your teen a better night’s sleep.

Personalize it!

Redecorating your teen’s bedroom can be a great chance to bond with them. Decorate together and make sure their vision comes to life. Embrace bolder colors, and contrast it with unique styled wood floors. Wood floors will also be easy for cleaning; regular maintenance and upkeep is simple and won’t require too much deep cleaning. If your teen would like neutral colored walls instead, you can add color in the form of rugs, paintings, or any other small decor items.

Decorate it

Your teen probably has their own unique style they would love to showcase. Decorate the room with pieces of art that he or she picks out. It is easy to get cheap paintings from vintage shops or thrift stores. These stores can also have vintage frames which can also bring life to the room. If your teen does their own artwork, consider hanging up their own creations on the wall.

Making Your Guest Bedroom as Welcoming as Possible

Tuesday, July 16th, 2019

It’s summer, which probably means you are going to have guests in your home, whether that be family or out-of-town friends. It’s only natural to want your guests to have the best stay and to feel as comfortable as they can. You may have already planned meals or places to visit, but have you thought about the room they will be staying in? Here is a list to help create a welcoming space for your guests.

Declutter

Get rid of any excess personal items that may have ended up on the nightstand or dresser. Also, if you have any clothes in the closet, remove those as well to make room for your guest’s clothing.

When in doubt, use white!
White linens are used widely in hotel rooms for a reason. Not only are they bright and welcoming, but with a splash of bleach, they’re also easy to clean. The same goes for your guest bedroom; if there are any stains on the linen or their towels, having them be white will take the stress off of you when it’s time to clean. Plus, the look of white, crisp sheets is extremely pleasing.

Bring in the nature

Adding a touch of greenery and natural decor will promote relaxation from your guests. You can add a vase with a floral bouquet for that touch beauty. Hardwood floors in the room will also add elegance into the room, with a touch of nature as well.

Add a mirror to expand the space

A mirror can be a great piece of wall decor, and if you are dealing with a small guest room, adding a mirror to the wall will visually enlarge the room.

Slightly contrast the cabinetry wood/stain with the hardwood floors

The contrast between the cabinets and hardwood floor can be minor. As you can see in the picture below, the cabinetry is only slightly darker compared to the hardwood floors, but it’s not a big difference and still compliments each other nicely.

You can always opt for a more dramatic difference and either have light colored hardwood floors and dark cabinets, or vice versa, like in the image below.  In this particular photo the cabinetry really pops and stands out!
