How to Choose a Vacuum for a Wood Floor

Friday, March 21st, 2014

Vacuuming is the easiest way to clean your hardwood floor. It’s quick, and it’s efficient, pulling fine particles off of the surface and out of every crevice. However, you shouldn’t use just any vacuum to clean a hardwood floor. Many vacuums have rough bristles than can scratch the floor, and carpet vacuums have large plastic wheels that could damage the floor as they roll over it. Here are some things you should look for in a hardwood floor vacuum.

Hardwood Floor Vacuums

  • Rubber wheels – Rubber wheels are easier on hardwood floors and will prevent scratching and other damage. Rubber padding around the base of the vacuum is also good for the same season.
  • No rolling brushes – These are great for carpets, but not so much for wood floors. Still, lots of vacuums include this feature, so if you must, try to find a vacuum that allows yo uto switch the brush off.
  • Suction – The better the suction power, the better the vacuum will be at cleaning up dirt, dust and debris. Read reviews online to find suction power comparisons.
  • Lightweight – Lightweight vacuums make the job easier to do.

Preventative Maintenance for Your Hardwood Flooring

Friday, November 4th, 2011

If you want your hardwood floors to not only last as long as possible, but to also look great for as long as possible, then a few preventative maintenance measures are in order. By taking a few minutes here and there to keep your floors clean, you will save yourself time and heartache in the future.

Every hardwood floor will undergo some amount of wear and tear depending on the amount of foot traffic it receives. Preventative maintenance and regular cleaning can help to significantly reduce the rate of wear.

Preventative maintenance includes:

•     Keep dirt and grime off the floor: No matter what you do, dirt, sand, and other foreign particles will find their way onto your hardwood floors. While you cannot prevent this from happening, you can be prompt in cleaning it up. Sweeping regularly is a great way to rid your hardwood floors of dirt and grime.

•     Rugs are your friends: Use rug in high traffic areas. This will help reduce wear and further preserve your hardwood floors.

•     Fabric Glides: Moving furniture on any hardwood floor can be a very dangerous thing to do. However, placing fabric glides on the bottoms of furniture legs will allow you to move furniture around without scuffing your floors.

•     Vacuum: Using a brush attachment, vacuum as much as possible. This will help to get rid of particles that sweeping just could not deal with.

•     Do not let spills sit for long: Moisture and hardwood floors just do not mix. Deal with any spills as quickly as possible, using a dry cloth or paper towel.

So take the time to properly protect your investment. But remember to always follow your flooring manufacturer’s floor care recommendations.
