How To Care for Your Hardwood Floor in the Winter

Wednesday, December 18th, 2013

The weather outside is frightful, and though the fire is so delightful, when we have someplace to go, we bring the weather in with us when we return. This includes snow, ice, slush, and debris that shouldn’t be on your nice hardwood floors. With that in mind, here are some tips for caring for your hardwood floor in the winter.

Floor Mats

Put floor mats in the house by the entrances and have you family take off wet shoes, snowpants, and jackets at the door so they’re not dripping water on the floor. You can put a dish-drainer tray mat with a towel underneath for a place for shoes to dry off.

Pets

Pets track in snow and mud from outside and leave their paw prints all over the floor. Train your pets to wait by the door while you towel off their paws before coming in.

Towels

If water does make it to the hardwood floor from outside, keep a towel handy to clean it up. Water damages hardwood floors when left untouched, so the sooner you clean it up, the better.
