Types of Wood Used in Hardwood Flooring

If you’re considering installing new hardwood flooring, you might be curious as to what kind of wood you should choose to use. Fortunately, there are a wide variety of wood types used in hardwood flooring, each with their respective advantages and disadvantages. Here are some of the more popular kinds of wood used in hardwood flooring today.

types of wood

Red Oak

The most popular choice for hardwood flooring in the U.S., this wood has a coarse grain and reddish color.

White Oak

White oak has a similar grain to red oak, with a few more burls and swirls. It is more durable than red oak, and has a brownish color.

A strong wood, but softer than red oak, and consequently softer than white oak as well. The color of birch wood can vary from light yellow to a dark red.

Consistent in grain and its reddish brown color, beech wood is durable, but slightly less hard than white oak. However, birch is one of the most stable woods, meaning that its fluctuations in size based on moisture content are less than other woods.

Douglas Fir

Douglas fir is known for its yellowish tan color, but as a soft wood it is used infrequently.

Generally a softer wood, cherry is more often used for decorative applications. However, not all cherry wood’s are created equal. Brazilian cherry is the fourth hardest wood on the Janka hardness scale, which measures the strength of wood based on how much force is required to embed half the diameter of a .444-inch steel ball in the wood. The rating for Brazilian cherry is 2820, compared to 1290 for northern red oak. Brazilian walnut and Brazilian teak are the hardest two woods, at 3680 and 3540 respectively.
