Winter is Approaching: How to Keep Elements Outdoors

December is here, which means winter is fast approaching. With sudden weather changes and temperatures plunging, it’s important to make sure you’re leaving outside elements, outside. Here’s how to prevent winter weather from making a mess inside your home:

Make sure your roof is in good condition

Before rain or snow starts pouring down onto your home, you need to make sure your roof is not damaged in any way. This includes any buckled or missing shingles that can lead to leaks. Also, make sure the flashing around your chimney is in good condition, and make sure any cracks are sealed.

Trim your trees

With trees starting to die down during the winter season, now is the best time to trim your trees and shrubs. This is especially helpful if in case of a storm, which can cause limbs and branches to fall onto your home if they are unstable or weighed down by snow or ice.

Get your mudroom ready

With ice, sleet and rain outside, bringing in moisture to your home can be a huge issue. To stop this from happening, make sure you have a space in your home where family can leave any umbrellas, wet jackets, and shoes. It doesn’t have to be a whole room – if you have hardwood floors in your home, you can put a rug or old carpet in front of entrances. You may also want to put a waterproof barrier under the rug to ensure that water does not escape and damage your wood floors.

These tips and tricks should get you ready for another year of winter weather! Make sure to always protect your investments by making sure your home and flooring is taken care of all season long.
