Howard County packs a lot of different homes into a fairly small area. A 19th-century stone house near Main Street in Ellicott City, a 1970s colonial in one of Columbia’s villages, and a new build on a few acres in Glenwood can all sit within a short drive of each other. Their floors don’t have much in common either.
Signature Hardwood Floors has been refinishing, repairing, and installing hardwood flooring in Howard County since 2004. Every project starts with a free in-home consultation, since the right plan depends on the house.
What Hardwood Flooring Projects Look Like Across Howard County
Older Homes in Ellicott City and the Historic Areas
Homes in and around historic Ellicott City often still have their original plank floors. After a century or more, those floors usually have a few old patch jobs, some loose or damaged boards, and finish worn down to bare wood in the walkways.
Most of our work in these homes is restoration and repair. We replace the boards that need it, source wood that matches what’s already there, and blend the stain so the new boards don’t stand out.
Established Neighborhoods in Columbia and Clarksville
Columbia’s villages and the neighborhoods around them are full of homes built between the late 1960s and the 1990s. Plenty of them came with solid oak floors that have since gone dull, picked up pet scratches, or spent decades under wall-to-wall carpet.
A full refinish brings that oak back, and it’s also the easiest time to change the color. If the boards are in decent shape and only look tired, a buff and coat restores the sheen without a full sanding.
Newer Builds in Fulton and Rural Properties Out West
Southern Howard County has a lot of newer construction around Fulton, while the western end of the county has farm properties in Glenwood, Glenelg, Dayton, and Woodbine. Both areas lean toward new installation. Wide plank hardwood and reclaimed wood suit farmhouse interiors well, and luxury vinyl plank holds up in mudrooms and entryways that see boots, dogs, and plenty of mud.
