4 Ways You’re Ruining Your Floors
Oct 09, 2019Although hardwood flooring may seem low-maintenance, it still needs some TLC to maintain it’s beauty and longevity. But it doesn’t require just any old cleaning routine – there’s a correct way to clean your floors without ruining them. It’s easy to learn, and once you get the hang of it, it’ll be second nature to you. Here are cleaning habits you need to stop doing to ensure your floors stay damage-free!
Mopping the floors
Hardwood floors are not tiles! They absorb and hold moisture, which means that using a wet mop should never be done. Water can seep through the floorboards and lead to warping or swelling. If you do choose to mop your floors, you should never use one that is saturated. It should be basically dry in order to keep your floors from being damaged.
Using the wrong vacuum attachment
In time, using the wrong vacuum head can cause damage to your floors, scratching them and allowing dirt and dust to hide in more places. Stay away from vacuum heads that have rotating brushes or stiff bristles, and instead use an attachment with a soft brush.
Using household cleaners
Using regular household products that work for other surfaces, such as ammonia-based cleaners, are actually extremely harmful on hardwood floors. They will get rid of stains, but in turn will slowly start to eat away at the surface of the floors, permanently damaging them. Instead, use oil-based cleaning products that will not damage your wood floor’s appearance or eliminate it’s protective coat. We recommend using Bona hardwood floor cleaning products for your floors, as this is what always works best for us and our clients.
Not doing regular floor maintenance
One of the most important factors in extending the life of your hardwood floors is with regular, routine maintenance. Sweeping regularly will eliminate dust, but also extend you floor’s lifespan. Also, if you notice scratches on your floors that accumulate over time, opt for repairing them as soon as possible. The sooner you fix the problem, the easier and quicker the repair job will be!
