5 Design Tricks to Maximize your Space

Aug 20, 2019

It’s easy to transform and maximize the space in your home with simple design techniques. This can be done by where your place your furniture, the colors you use in your home, and decor pieces that give an illusion of a larger space. Here are some basic tips to help you create a space that is not only beautiful, but also functional:

Avoid dark colors

Darker colors in your home will dim the reflection of light in a room, which can make a room seem smaller. Opt for light and neutral shades for your walls such as white, grey or beige. If you are thinking of getting hardwood floors, use a lighter stain color, such as beige or grey. If you already have hardwood floors, you can simply get them re-stained to a color that is more inviting and open.

It does not just stop at your walls and floors- consider the furniture and decor in your home as well. Try to keep the colors neutral so your rooms are not overwhelmed with dark colors. For that pop of color, this can be presented in items such as accent pillows or rugs.

Utilize mirrors

Mirrors are not only a great decor piece, but can also visually maximize a room. Try to place mirrors where they can reflect the most light, such as on the opposite wall of a window. If you have a dark corner in your room, you can also put a mirror there so it feels less constrictive.

Curtains

Having your window curtains start from the ceiling instead of right above the window can visually elongate a room. Also, using curtains that have a more translucent fabric can aid in bringing more light into your home from the window.

Furniture pieces

Try to avoid bulky, big couches that can take up too much space in a room. Instead, opt for loveseats and armchairs that are placed in a circle or square formation. This way, the space is more open.

Wall decor

Utilize shelving to hold some books and decor pieces, as to not limit your storage to only the ground which can be distracting. Also, instead of floor lamps, try wall sconces which can leave room for more furniture space on the ground and reduce clutter.
