Basic Maintenance Do’s and Don’ts
Jul 15, 2024

Hardwood floor maintenance is generally very quick and easy. Routine cleaning involves sweeping, dusting, mopping or vacuuming. Be sure to clean spills ASAP with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Do not use wet mops or steam mops; these can damage the finish or the wood over periods of time.
In order to avoid scratches, place breathable throw rugs at entrances, put floor protector pads at the bottoms of the legs of any furniture, and avoid walking on the floors with sports cleats or high-heel shoes.
If your floor begins to look a little dull, use a wood floor cleaner to maintain the finish. Use it as directed, and make sure you are using products recommended by your flooring or finish manufacturer. Using the wrong type of cleaning product could damage your finish and wood.
More Do’s and Don’ts of Wood Floor Maintenance

Hardwood floors add beauty and warmth to your home, but they require proper care to maintain their shine and durability. Follow these essential do’s and don’ts to keep your hardwood floors looking their best:
Do:
- Sweep or dust mop regularly: Dirt and grit act like sandpaper, scratching the floor’s finish.
- Use a damp (not wet) mop: Excessive water can damage wood. Use a slightly damp mop with a hardwood floor cleaner.
- Clean up spills immediately: Water, juice, or other liquids can stain or warp the wood if not cleaned up promptly.
- Use felt pads on furniture legs: This prevents scratches and dents when furniture is moved.
- Place mats at entryways: These trap dirt and debris before they can be tracked onto the floor.
Don’t:
- Use harsh cleaners: Avoid ammonia, bleach, or abrasive cleaners that can damage the finish.
- Wet mop the floor: Never use a soaking wet mop, as water can seep into the wood and cause it to swell or buckle.
- Wear high heels or cleats: These can dent or scratch the floor.
- Drag furniture across the floor: Always lift furniture to move it, using felt pads or furniture sliders to protect the floor.
- Wax floors: Most modern hardwood floors have a polyurethane finish that doesn’t require waxing. Wax can actually make newer floors slippery and difficult to clean.
By following these simple guidelines, you can ensure that your hardwood floors stay beautiful and last for years to come. If you have any concerns about specific cleaning products or techniques, it’s always a good idea to consult the manufacturer’s instructions or a flooring professional.
