Why Transition Molding is Important
Oct 26, 2018Transition molding is what helps one surface transition to another, making sure there are no unfinished edges. Transition molding is actually an extremely essential piece for the look and function of your floors. It also prevents tripping if you are walking from one surface to another.
What Does Transition Molding Do?
Transition molding has many purposes, one being making a nice, smooth transition from a horizontal flat surface to a vertical flat surface. It also helps during height differences, separating rooms, or to have a clean edge for a flooring ledge.
Different Transition Moldings
The most common type of transition molding is stair nosing. Stair nosing hides the edges of wood flooring on a staircase, where the two wood floors meet. It can be quite difficult to walk on a staircase without one. This is because it provides extra space as you walk up and down the staircase.
When transitioning different floor types like carpet at a different height, or carpet to hardwood, end caps can be used. This is a right-angle shaped piece of wood that is designed to end a floor by covering the top and side of its edge. A threshold is also widely used in this circumstance.
Baseboard molding is the molding that is installed at the base of your wall. It is installed at the bottom of a baseboard to cover an expansion gap, preventing buckling when flooring expands during humid weather.
